The statues of the lions were dedicated by the naxians to the Sanctuary of Apollo about the ned of the 700 BC. Durin the Hellenistic era, when the islansd’s sanctity gave way to an intensely commercial and cosmopolitan atmosphere, it is very likely that the statues were moved farther south so that the new inhibitants could build their ostentatiously luxurious houses. The terrace was probaply destroyd early in the 1st cent. BC since part of the lions were used as construction material on the wall built in 67 BC by the Roman Gaius Triarius to protect whatever had survied the attack of Athenodoros pirates.
